Named after Warwick Bruce Murray, a viticulturist, wine lover, self-proclaimed green hippy, and a good friend from Rob and Derrik from Barossa Australia. To say we are feeling the pressure after the amazing success and reception our 2018 MDW got would be an understatement. But I think we rose to the occasion. The 2019 Mad Dog is a cuvée of three terraced vineyards: the original Mad Dog Warwick vineyard, 80 year old Dewy’s Drop, and 30 year old newly restored Mt. Lehmo. This is the second year since we took possession of Mt. Lehmo and the first year we got a usable crop; it's situated right beside the Dewy's Drop vineyard so you can guess their quality. The 2019 harvest was a tough one, and our quantities reflect that and because of this we decided to blend in the little Dewy’s Drop that we had into the Mad Dog. It was a tough decision but the right one as the addition has made this year’s Mad Dog lush and opulent but still retaining that linear acidic backbone. And the decision to primarily use mature oak adds more layers of texture to this already deliciously textural wine. This year’s Mad Dog is an expansion on what we accomplished in 2018. Welcome to year two of Madame Flöck.

MFW: 'The 2019er Mad Dog Warwick, as it is referred to on the label (named after Warwick Bruce Murray, a viticulturist in the Barossa Valley and a mentor who inspired this project), is a bone-dry Riesling made along natural lines from 30-year-old vines in a terraced part of the Winninger Domgarten as well as from 30 to 80-year-old vines in the Lehmener Ausoniusstein.
The wine was fermented and aged without any sulfur or additive on its gross lees with regular steering of the lees in a mix of an old barrique (20%) and stainless steel (80%) for 10 months before being bottled unfiltered and with little SO2 added (less than 50 mg/l of total SO2). It offers a rather engaging and subtly ripe nose made of pear, camphor, cassis, elderflower, coconut, earthy spices, a hint of volatile, baked apple, and fine gingery herbs. The wine is beautifully creamy and subtly zesty on the palate. Baked apple, citrusy cream, earthy spices, and tart elements make for a magnificently dramatic yet refined feel in the finish. A touch of bitter lemony fruits adds freshness and cut to the after-taste.
Lovers of “low intervention” wine will massively enjoy this outstanding rendition of the style! Now-2025'
